The oldest Indian on ODI captaincy debut Shikhar dhawan is in good form for T20 World cup

Shikhar Dhawan is perhaps one of the most underrated cricketers of modern times. He has been the scheme of things for Indian cricket for quite a lot of time and has been the unsung hero for Indian cricket in a lot of crucial games. Going back in time, one can remember the contribution he had to the Indian team during the Champions trophy win in 2013. He came in as an opener and scored some really important innings for the country at the top of the order. His pairing with Rohit has delivered for a while in the limited overs format and that would make a lot of people feel that he deserves a spot in the T20 world cup playing XI.
If we go by his current form, he is perhaps the most inform player in the country. In the IPL, he scored 380 runs in just 8 games during the first phase of the 2021 season. He was then entrusted with the captaincy duties for the Indian team in the Sri Lankan tour and became the oldest Indian ODI player to make his captaincy debut at 35 years and 225 days. This was a reward for his years of service and a prolific career that has seen him be at the top of the game for over 15 years in the domestic game. Many experts would argue though that he has peaked now as a player and is probably playing at his very best. His partnership with Prithvi Shaw has been prolific for the Delhi capitals and many would argue that it is the reason why a team which has been down and out for the longest time has made a comeback. So where does that leave the fantasy team makers making Indian cricket prediction. Is Shikhar Dhawan in the scheme of things for the T20 world cup. Well, the answer to that should be yes going on current form. But the Indian team is in that phase where they are going through a problem of plenty. Virat Kohli has often made it clear in his interviews that Virat is looking to open the innings and with the player that Rohit Sharma has been in the past, it is impossible to drop him. There are other players in contention too such as KL Rahul and Prithvi Shaw who offer a lot of things at the top of the order and are proven performers and while there are many things going for Shikhar, one thing that doesn’t go in his favor is the fact that he is a one-dimensional player and doesn’t have too much experience of batting in the middle order. With players such as Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan making a case for themselves in the middle order, there is a chance that and opener may be dropped to accommodate them.
Shikhar is a true professional though and would never go moaning about being dropped. He has always put the team performance over his own. Even when it comes to the IPL, there was criticism over his strike rate and he responded by strikingly improving his strike rate and taking the game to the opposition. It worked well for him and really worked well for his team. With the squad announcement date nearing, he will be really unlucky if he doesn’t make the squad and even if he does not play every game, he is surely going to stay in the team as an option for the opening slot.
